Appeared in only 38 games in the 1999/2000 season after suffering a torn labrum of the right shoulder...Was on the disabled list May 17 and surgery performed by Dr.James Andrews on June 17...Was batting .292 with 13 doubles, 2 homeruns and 12 RBI in 38 games...Enntered 1999 with a career average of .236...Started the season by matching his career high with four hits on opening night at Minnesota...Hit in seven straight games from April 8 to 14 batting .429 (12-28) with a home run and seven RBI...Collected career hit number #50 on May 11 at KC(double)...2HR's - 1 vs LHP, 1 vs RHP...Fielding percentage was .980 (201-205) with 34 double plays...In the spring hit .324 with 2 HR and 13 RBI

In his first season with Toronto hit .295 with 29 doubles and career highs of 32 home runs and 104 RBI...Set new club record for home runs and RBI by a designated hitter...Previous marks were 25HR's by Canseco in 1998 and 91 RBI by Winfield in 1992...Was second only to Edgar Martinez among AL DH's in home runs and RBI...Was acquired by Toronto from Montreal on March 16 in a three way deal which saw Texas acquire David Segui from Toronto and Montreal acquire 1B Lee Stevens from Texas...Reached 100 RBI's on September 15 in Chicago... Suffered from a hyper-extended right elbow and did not play after September 24...Had an MRI which revealed loose bodies in his right elbow which were removed October 10, by Dr. Lewis Yocum...Was one of Toronto's four players to hit 30HR's in 2000 (Batista, Cruz, Delgado) â it marks just the second time in AL history this has been done (Anaheim - 2000)...Also one of Toronto's seven players to hit 20 home runs and become just the second such group in Major League history (Baltimore - 1996).

On September 16 against the White Sox was hit on the right side of the face by a ball off the bat of Jose Valentin... Returned to the mound on September 28 in a start at Baltimore where he suffered his 12th loss of the season... Pitched in relief in Cleveland on October 1 to finish the season... Opponents finished the season batting .290 with a .294 average by left-handers and a .287 average by right handers... In his first inning pitched opponents hit .306... At home was 3-6 with a 7.53 ERA while on the road posted a winning record of 7-6 with a 5.25 ERA.
